In a DaaS cloud computing solution, all the hardware and infrastructure is the sole responsibility of the Cloud Service Provider (CSP). All the cloud tenant’s virtual desktops (VD), data and productivity applications are housed in the data center of the CSP. This post will highlight some of the core benefits of a DaaS solution.
List of Desktop as a Service (DaaS) Core Benefits?
An end user can access the Virtual Desktop (VD) environment from multiple device platforms. The login device may be a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop. User will access the VD generally through a web browser by entering the unique login credentials.
All the work performed by the user is saved over the cloud network. When a user is executing a task over the office desktop, he can simply logout the VD. On reaching home, the use can again pick up right from where he left off by accessing the VD through his personal tablet at home. This makes DaaS a very flexible solution.
In addition to supporting multiple devices, the VD can be accessed via devices running on different operating systems. Any device can be used to access a VD, regardless of whether it runs on Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS or Android. This benefit makes DaaS a highly versatile cloud based solution.
In a DaaS infrastructure, all the business critical data of an organization is stored centrally in the data center of the Cloud Service Provider (CSP). Administratively, it is much easier to secure a single repository of data instead of multiple devices.
CSPs deploy multitude of cyber security measures such as encryption, firewalls and multi factor authentication to secure the cloud tenant’s critical data. Each user is granted access to the organization’s data only after passing authentication protocols.
Even if a user’s login device is lost or stolen, the data will still remain secure as it resides on the CSP’s data center and not the end point device. In addition to the above measures, CSPs regularly create backup of their tenant’s data. This adds an additional layer of data security to an already well secured cloud solution.
Today’s workforce needs change rapidly with seasonal trends. DaaS solutions rapidly enable organizations to scale their operations up or down. Firstly, the scalability of VDs can be done within minutes. Secondly, this featured does not entail any fixed costs. If VDs are added, an additional pre agreed usage fee will be charged and vice versa.
When scaling up, the cloud tenant does not have to deploy any additional hardware as it is fully managed by the CSP. In scaling down scenarios, no expensive hardware of the cloud tenant becomes redundant. DaaS solutions can be scaled up or down rapidly, without giving rise to any administrative challenges.
DaaS cloud solutions do not carry any fixed costs. The cloud tenant is billed purely on the “Pay as You Use” model. This billing formula applies to both the deployed VDs and any additional applications or features. This relieves the cloud tenant from capital expenditures and makes the task of forecasting costs much accurate.
DaaS solutions are highly geared towards productivity and efficiency. A user can remain productive from virtually any location that has the internet. This job is further facilitated by multi-device and multiple operating system support. When any task is executed over a VD, the processing resources of the CSP’s data center are utilized.
This enables the execution of processor intensive tasks a breeze. Secondly, the cloud tenant can get away even with obsolete devices at the end user level. This eliminates the need to upgrade the organization’s in house IT hardware, specially the end point devices.
Capital Expenditures (CapEx)
To the extent of an organization’s IT infrastructure, virtually no major capital expenditures (CapEx) are required after availing a quality DaaS solution. CSPs procure, maintain and upgrade their data centers and ancillary hardware purely from their indigenous resources.
